Social/Emotional and Self- Regulation Strategies and Skills at Home
When it comes to learning social and emotional skills as well as self-regulation skills, a child's parents or caregivers and the home environment are the first as well as the main source of learning. There are several strategies that parents and caregivers can implement at home to to encourage and foster social and emotional learning and self-regulation in the infancy, toddlerhood, and early childhood developmental stages. Strategies for parents or caregivers to implement at home in the infancy stage include responding happily and softly to babies cues, and soothing infants they are hungry or upset. Strategies for toddlers include talking about feelings and acknowledging their feelings, establishing routines, and providing sensory experiences are good ways to encourage self-regulation and social emotional learning in toddlers. For children in the early childhood stage, implementing a calm corner at home, practicing breathing techniques, practicing role-play situations, and reading books to your child or providing books for your child to read about social interactions and emotional or self-regulating situations can be great tools to encourage social and emotional as well as self regulation skills.
